Live, Love, Laugh (Destroy All Humans)
Amazon’s home assistant, the Echo, known more popularly by her stage name Alexa, has been creeping out users by bursting into random fits of laughter.
Short bursts of childlike laughter seemingly coming from nowhere is usually a worry – especially when you’re home alone.
“Lying in bed about to fall asleep when Alexa on my Amazon Echo Dot lets out a very loud and creepy laugh... there’s a good chance I get murdered tonight,” wrote one Twitter user after experiencing the technical glitch.
And so the stories continued, until Amazon admitted something funny was going on. In a statement to the Verge, they acknowledged the glitch, explaining that the Echo was likely responding to what it believed were requests for it to laugh. The team worked out a fix for the bug by disabling the phrase “Alexa laugh” and replacing it with “Alexa, can you laugh?”, a statement that is “less likely to have false positives.”
We weren’t convinced, though, and began building fallout shelters in preparation for the inevitable apocalyptic wave of laughing Alexas, readying themselves for world domination.
Alexa Responds To A Lot of Sex
That was until one tech-blogger over at mtlblog.com reported finding another interesting Echo ‘feature’.
While watching Netflix show Wild Wild Country he commented that one of the gurus on the show would often encourage members of his community have a lot of sex. Which is when Alexa jumped into the conversation, with her standard, “Hmm, I don’t know that”. Apparently Alexa thinks her name is "a lot of sex".
Admittedly it doesn’t happen every time, but they did manage to get it on tape twice in a row.
Just when we thought the robot uprising had finally begun not with a bang but with a giggle, Alexa has proven herself not-so-smart after all.
