Top 4 Winter Cocktails

What You Should Be Drinking When The Temperature Drops
Penthouse Staff

Summer drinking brings to mind minimal clothing and warm days cooled down with boozy spritzers and punch by the pool, whereas the idea of a winter cocktail is pretty damn miserable by comparison. But it doesn't have to be. It's all about drinking seasonally by expanding into deeper, richer flavours.

Here are our top 4 delicious go-to cocktails to get you through the colder months.

1. The Hot Toddy

The world’s most simple tipple, the Hot Toddy’s taste is anything but basic. The perfect medicine for anyone suffering from cold hands to a head cold, the Hot Toddy is made of three simple ingredients: a base spirit (usually whiskey, rum, brandy or sherry), hot water and sugar. Pro tip: warm your drinking vessel by pouring hot water in before preparing the cocktail.

2 tablespoons of base spirit (whiskey, rum, brandy or sherry)

1 tablespoon of honey or sugar

Hot water

How to make it

Pre-heat your glass by pouring the hot water into it before making the cocktail. Add the base spirit and honey/sugar and stir until dissolved. Garnish with lemon peel to turn your Toddy into a Sling (the hot version of a Sling).

2. Spicy Margarita

You’ll forget all about the chilly weather once you wrap your lips around this tongue-tingling cocktail. The Spicy Margarita is made from an agave azul blanco tequila that’s been infused with some of the hottest peppers in the world - ghost peppers. The artwork on the bottle features a skeleton with a mexican chilli for a heart, which should give you an indication of the heat this tiny devil packs. This drink doesn’t lean on too much citrus, instead, it’s a smart balance between heat, agave nectar and fresh lime juice.

1 shot of Ghost Tequila

½ shot or orange liqueur

1 ½ shots of lime juice

1 tablespoon of agave nectar

1 serrano chilli pepper sliced

1 lime wedge

How to make it

Salt the rim of a double old fashioned glass and fill with ice. In a cocktail shaker, add ice, all the ingredients and shake. Strain into the glass and garnish with a few slices of serrano pepper or jalapeno and a wedge of lime.

3. Bourbon Coffee

Hit two birds with one stone with this boozy coffee cocktail. Bourbon Coffee is an easy cocktail to whip up for yourself or if you’re playing bartender, a crowd-sized batch at a gathering at yours.

1 shot of Mr Black’s Cold Brew Coffee Liqueor

½ shot of bourbon

1 heaped tablespoon of cream

1 tablespoon maple syrup

Ground nutmeg

How to make it

Add the coffee, bourbon, cream and maple syrup to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for around 15 seconds. Strain into a glass and top with nutmeg.

4. Spiced Old Fashioned

The only thing better than warming up with the classic Old Fashioned is swapping out the Whiskey and giving it a new lease on life with Anejo aged tequila. The agave and chili bitters add a level of complexity to the classic.

2 parts Altos Anejo Tequila

2 tsp Agave syrup

2 dashes smoked chili or chili chipotle bitters

1 grapefruit

How to make it

In an Old Fashioned glass, muddle together the agave and the bitters. Add the tequila and fill with ice. Stir. Garnish with a grapefruit twist.
