Money and weed go together like Kanye and crazy. And with the legal marijuana market hitting $6.7 billion in sales in 2016, there’s big money out there for an enterprising stoner looking to capitalise on a high idea. And as you might expect there are a few celebrities eager to get a piece of the action. Designer cannabis strains have been a thing for a while now, but until recently they haven’t carried the endorsement of a public figure. Below, we’ve put together a list of the pioneering celebrities who are cashing in on their name to bring you their unique brand of smoke.
Outlaw, country music legend and spirit guide to tokers across the nation, there are few people as synonymous with marijuana as Willie Nelson. So, of course, he’s got his trademarked strains. What else would you expect from the guy who wrote "Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die" and “I’ll Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again”? The 83-year-old announced his intentions to enter the market on 4/20 (of course) under the brand “Willie’s Reserve”. Long lasting and heady, give Willie’s Sour Diesel a spin if you want to feel like you’re “on the road again.” Available in Colorado and Washington.
And just when you thought that Willie Nelson was the most epic purveyor of celebrity buds, along comes the God of Weed himself to sell you his holy strain of herb from beyond the grave. Bob Marley is probably the most famous weed smoker in history, and his opinions regarding ganja and its spiritual properties are well documented. Like Che Guevara’s face printed on shirts made in sweat factories, there’s a subtle irony to commercialising Marley’s love of weed in the name of turning a profit. But don’t let that stop you, “Marley Natural” Gold is a good smoke if you’re in the right part of the country. Expect a piney fragrance that gives way to a calming high.
Bethenny Frankel, “star” of reality T.V. show Real Housewives of New York is one of the last people you might expect to find on a list featuring Snoop Dog and Willie Nelson. But here she is. Frankel may not be one of the O.G. weed revolutionaries, but she’s not letting that stop her take root in the industry with her original strains. And, credit to her, it’s a pretty clever idea. Frankel claims that her weed is engineered to suppress your appetite so you can avoid a late night Pringles binge that inevitably comes once the munchies hit. “Skinnygirl” wasn’t on the market at the time of writing, so you guys are going to have to seek out Weed Lite and try it for yourselves when it gets released.
Snoop Dogg has never been shy about two things: Shameless self-promotion and his love for Mary Jane. So it just makes sense that he would combine the two to make his own special brand of bud. Snoop has eight of his own original strains under the brand name “Leafs by Snoop” that range from heavy hitting THC filled buds to the more medicinal strains with higher levels of CBD. What’s more is that he founded an Uber-style delivery start-up called “Eaze” that promises to deliver weed to your door in under 10 minutes. The company was the first marijuana-based business to receive international investment, and early signs of success are seeing the company expand rapidly. Just listen to the man himself if you need any assurances on the quality of Snoop’s leaves. At the launch of his product line in Denver he announced: “Since I’ve been at the forefront of this movement for over 20 years now, I’m a master of marijuana.”
